Why this matters

Why occupational road risk is one of the biggest business risks

Outside heavy industry, driving is the most hazardous activity employees undertake on their employer’s behalf, and the one least likely to be properly represented on the risk register. It takes place off-site, unsupervised, at speed, in traffic no employer controls.

Typical baseline fleet

41%Low risk
31%Medium risk
28%High risk

Indicative distribution across first-time fleet-wide assessments. It is the size of the high-risk group that most organisations find unexpected.

Highest-risk activity

Road collisions

For most non-industrial employers, driving is the most hazardous activity their employees undertake at work. It carries a fatality risk profile unlike anything else on a conventional office-based risk register.

Premium & excess exposure

Insurance costs

Claims frequency drives renewal pricing harder than claims value. A recurring pattern of minor at-fault damage can cost more across a three-year period than one substantial loss.

Lost productive days

Vehicle downtime

A damaged van is never only a repair bill. It is a hire vehicle, a re-planned schedule, unbilled work and a technician who cannot reach the customer.

Duty of care

Employee wellbeing

Drivers involved in collisions can experience lasting anxiety about driving. Fatigue, time pressure and unrealistic scheduling are foreseeable contributors an employer can control.

Visible on every road

Corporate reputation

Liveried vehicles advertise in both directions. Poor driving in a branded van is witnessed by customers, prospects and procurement panels alike.

Driving for work

Legal responsibilities

Health and safety law applies to work-related driving as it does to any other work activity. Employers are expected to assess and manage the risk, and to be able to show how.

Every one of these exposures responds to the same intervention: establishing which of your drivers carry the most risk, then acting on that specifically.

Your legal responsibilities
Why companies choose us

A driving instructor teaches people to pass a test. We reduce your corporate risk exposure.

Both hold professional qualifications. Only one produces something your health and safety committee, your insurer and your auditor can use.

For comparison

Traditional driving instructor

Built around passing the test

  • Learner-focused syllabus

A syllabus written for novice drivers, not for occupational road risk.

  • No fleet reporting

Spoken feedback to the driver; nothing for the manager or the driver file.

  • Limited compliance knowledge

Rarely familiar with driving-for-work duties or HSE guidance.

  • One-off lessons

No baseline, no re-score, no way to evidence improvement.

  • Single-area availability

Local coverage only, which is impractical for a geographically dispersed workforce.

  • Dual-control school car

Not the vehicle, the load or the roads on which the employee does the job.

The Foresight standard

Foresight Fleet Solutions

Built for the fleet risk register

  • Fleet specialists

Occupational road risk is our entire practice, not an adjunct to something else.

  • Professional risk reporting

Written management reports with scored categories and clear actions.

  • Occupational road safety focus

Driver, vehicle and journey risk assessed as one system.

  • Corporate account management

A named contact, agreed SLAs, consolidated invoicing and MI.

  • Scalable nationwide delivery

Assessors across eight UK regions delivering to one standard.

  • Assessed in the work vehicle

The driver’s own van or car, own base, own typical route.

Industries we serve

Built for organisations whose people drive to do their job

Different sectors carry different road risk profiles. A community carer making fourteen visits a day faces a different set of hazards from a technician working the strategic road network, and the assessment weighting reflects that.

See sector risk profiles →

Our assessment process

From first conversation to evidenced improvement

A repeatable five-stage cycle. Stages one to four typically complete within three weeks of a driver being scheduled; stage five is where measured risk reduction is delivered.

    Consultation

We review your fleet profile, incident history, telematics data and existing policy to agree scope and priority drivers.

    • Fleet composition, mileage bands and driver roles
    • Claims, incident and telematics review
    • Existing driving-for-work policy gap review
    • Agreed scope, schedule and reporting format

    45–60 minutes, no cost

  2. 02

    Driver Assessment

A 90-minute on-road assessment per driver, in their own work vehicle, from their own base, on a mixed route.

    • Licence and eyesight verification
    • Daily walkaround check observed
    • Urban, rural and high-speed road sections
    • Commentary drive and on-road debrief

    90 minutes per driver

Scores are moderated against our competency framework and each driver is classified Low, Medium or High risk.

    • 14 scored competency categories
    • Consistent moderation across assessors
    • Low / Medium / High classification
    • Fleet-level themes and hotspots identified

    Within 5 working days

Compliance & legal responsibilities

Supporting your driving for work responsibilities

Employers have responsibilities to manage the risks created by work-related driving. Our role is to give you the driver-side evidence — assessed, scored and documented — that a credible risk management approach requires.

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

Sets the general duty on employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of employees at work, including while they are driving for work.

Management of H&S at Work Regulations 1999

Require employers to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessment of work activities. Work-related driving is a work activity like any other.

HSE Driving for Work guidance

HSE guidance frames work-related road risk around three areas: the driver, the vehicle and the journey. Our assessment framework mirrors that structure.

Duty of care to your drivers

Covers employees in company vehicles and grey-fleet drivers using their own vehicle for work — a group frequently left outside the fleet risk register.

Driver assessments and training form one part of a wider fleet risk management strategy. Nothing on this site constitutes legal advice; for advice on your specific duties, consult a qualified health and safety or legal professional.

Testimonials

What fleet, safety and operations leaders tell us

Feedback of the kind gathered at client programme reviews, from the three roles that own fleet risk: fleet management, operations and health & safety.

The written reports are the difference. Our previous provider gave the driver a chat and us nothing. Now every driver has a scored report on file and I can walk into an audit with it.
RKRachel KinsellaHealth & Safety ManagerBuilding services contractor, 180 vehicles
We assessed 62 engineers across four depots in under three months without losing a single scheduled job. The scheduling was handled around our diary, not theirs.
DADominic AshworthFleet ManagerNational telecoms infrastructure firm
The Low, Medium, High classification changed the conversation with our board. Twenty-nine per cent of our drivers were High risk. That number got the training budget approved in one meeting.
YBYvonne BaptisteOperations DirectorRegional facilities management group
What I appreciated was the tone. Our engineers are experienced people and they would have rejected anything that felt like a driving lesson. This felt like a professional review, and they took it seriously.
SOStephen OkonkwoHead of Field OperationsWater and wastewater services
We used the post-incident assessment for a driver returning after a serious collision. It gave HR and me a documented recommendation instead of a judgement call. That was worth a great deal to us.
AMAlison MarchettiHR DirectorCare provider, 240 community staff
Our broker specifically asked what we were doing about driver risk at renewal. Handing over the fleet summary report and the development records was the most useful ten minutes of that meeting.

Each Fleet Driver Risk Assessment is 90 minutes on-road, plus roughly 20 minutes for the licence and eyesight check, walkaround observation and end-of-drive debrief. Allow around two hours of the driver’s day in total. We do not shorten it, and that is deliberate: a 30-minute drive reveals how someone performs while being observed, not how they habitually drive.

Every driver receives a written report covering 14 scored competency categories, an overall Low, Medium or High risk classification, narrative commentary from the assessor, specific recommended actions and a suggested re-assessment interval. Alongside the individual reports, managers receive a fleet summary showing the risk distribution across the cohort and the dominant themes. Reports are delivered digitally within five working days.

Yes, and it is our default. The assessor travels to the driver’s normal base, uses the driver’s own work vehicle and builds a route from the roads that driver covers day to day. It removes travel time for your team and produces a far more realistic assessment than a neutral vehicle on unfamiliar roads.

Yes. We deliver across eight UK regions: London and the South East, South West and Wales, the Midlands, the East of England, the North West, Yorkshire and the North East, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Multi-site fleets are delivered to a single standard with one point of contact and consolidated reporting, so a driver in Aberdeen is assessed and scored exactly as a driver in Bristol.

Yes. We assess company cars, car-derived vans, panel vans and 3.5 tonne vehicles, plus grey-fleet drivers using their own vehicles for work. Where a driver operates more than one vehicle type we will normally assess in the one they spend most of their working time in, and note the other in the report.

Most clients start with a fleet-wide baseline and then move onto a rolling programme: new starters assessed at induction, Medium and High risk drivers into development and re-scored, and everyone else on an annual or biennial review cycle. You get a named account manager, an agreed schedule, quarterly management information and consolidated invoicing.
