Assess

New Starter Driver Assessment

On-road assessment when an employee becomes authorised to drive for work.

Duration
Approximately 90 minutes
Delivery
On-road, in the vehicle the employee will use for work
Output
Written assessment report with risk classification and recommendations

A new starter assessment gives organisations a documented, on-road view of how an employee drives at the point they join the business or become authorised to drive for work — before they begin covering business mileage. It uses the same assessment criteria and reporting format as the Fleet Driver Risk Assessment, so new starters and existing drivers are directly comparable.

What the assessment includes

Driver briefing

The purpose and structure of the assessment explained to the new starter.

Licence and eyesight checks where appropriate

Reviewed in line with your organisation’s onboarding process.

Vehicle check observation

The daily walkaround check and cab set-up observed.

On-road assessment

Approximately 90 minutes on a route representative of the role.

Report and recommendation

Documented findings, classification and any recommended next steps.

Programme scheduling

On a programme, new-starter assessments are normally batched with other activity in the area. Attendance is arranged as soon as reasonably practicable rather than guaranteed immediately.

What your organisation receives

  • A documented practical baseline from the start of employment
  • Early identification of development needs before mileage builds up
  • A consistent, repeatable induction step for driving roles
  • Reporting comparable with the rest of your driving population

Scope

Driver assessment and development can form part of a wider approach to managing occupational road risk, alongside vehicle maintenance, journey planning, policy, licence checking and incident review.
