Every assessed driver produces a written management report. The illustrative example below shows the structure, the assessment categories and the level of detail — using entirely fictional data.

Overall Risk Classification
MEDIUM
Development areas identified that may warrant further intervention. Suggested reassessment interval: 12 months, or sooner if further development is undertaken.
Assessment Categories
| Area | Finding | Assessor note |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | Development | Forward scanning shortened in heavy urban traffic. |
| Planning | Development | Late positioning approaching two roundabout exits. |
| Hazard awareness | Satisfactory | Pedestrian and cyclist hazards identified in good time. |
| Speed management | Satisfactory | Limits observed throughout; approach speeds appropriate. |
| Following distance | Development | Gap reduced below two seconds on dual carriageway. |
| Junctions | Satisfactory | Observation and decision-making appropriate. |
| Roundabouts | Development | Lane selection corrected late on one approach. |
| Lane discipline | Satisfactory | Appropriate lane use maintained. |
| Vehicle control | Strength | Smooth, well-controlled inputs throughout. |
| Manoeuvring | Satisfactory | Reversing carried out with effective all-round observation. |
| Driver attitude | Strength | Calm, courteous and receptive to feedback. |
| Eco-driving considerations | Satisfactory | Gear selection and coasting generally efficient. |
Key Strengths
- Vehicle control was smooth and well-managed throughout the assessment.
- Attitude towards other road users was calm and courteous.
- Speed limits were observed consistently on all road types driven.
- The daily vehicle walkaround check was completed without prompting.
Development Areas
- Forward observation shortened in dense urban traffic, reducing planning time.
- Following distance reduced below a two-second gap on dual carriageway.
- Late lane selection on two roundabout approaches.
- Mirror use before changing speed or position was inconsistent.
Assessor Comments
Sample Driver presented as a competent and confident driver with good vehicle control and a constructive attitude to feedback. The main theme through the assessment was forward planning: in heavier traffic, observation tended to shorten to the vehicle ahead, which reduced the time available to respond and led to later positioning decisions. Following distance narrowed on faster roads, particularly when traffic volume increased. These patterns are suitable for targeted development focused on forward planning and following distance.
Recommended Actions
- 1Targeted Driver Development session focused on forward planning and following distance (approximately 90 minutes).
- 2Driver to review mirror-use routine before changes of speed or direction.
- 3Reassessment in 12 months, or following completion of development if sooner.
- 4No restriction on driving duties recommended on the basis of this assessment.
Management Summary
One driver assessed. Overall classification MEDIUM. Two development themes identified — forward planning and following distance — both suitable for a short targeted development session. No immediate restriction on driving duties recommended. Where a group of drivers is assessed, this section also summarises themes across the group, activity by site, and which drivers remain scheduled.

Illustrative example
This page is an illustrative example of report structure and wording, not an extract from a real report. The assessment framework covers 14 competency categories; the sample shows a representative selection of the areas that applied to this fictional drive. Category weightings, scoring and internal review rules are not published.
When reports arrive
Normally within 2 working days of the assessment for the individual driver report. Normally within 3 working days of the final assessment for the management summary where a group of drivers is assessed. A high-risk finding is escalated promptly to your authorised contact rather than held for the next scheduled report.
Structured so a manager can act on it
The report is written to be read by someone who was not in the vehicle. Every finding is tied to an assessment area, and every recommendation is tied to a finding.
Driver and assessment details
Who was assessed, in which vehicle, on what date and by whom.
Assessment categories
Each area applied during the assessment, with the finding recorded against it.
Overall risk classification
A Low, Medium or High classification using a consistent framework.
Key strengths
What the driver did well, so the written record is balanced.
Development areas
Specific, observed behaviours rather than general commentary.
Assessor comments
Narrative context explaining what sat behind the findings.
Recommended actions
Prioritised actions for management consideration.
Management summary
A short summary for management, plus group themes where several drivers are assessed.
Reassessment interval
A suggested interval before the driver is next assessed.
